Mr. Button attempted to rescue a young boy who was trapped in a burning house in Edmonton, Alberta, on August 6, 1990. Alerted to the fire, Mr. Button ran to the second storey to search for the child, but was forced to retreat because of the heavy smoke. Although having difficulty breathing, he again mounted the stairs but was driven back by the toxic smoke and intense heat. Fortunately, the child was located by another rescuer and brought to safety.
