On July 3, 1991, Ms. Leech rescued a child who was being attacked by a cougar on Six Mile Reserve near Lillooet, British Columbia. The operator of a day care, Ms. Leech had taken a small group of children for a walk to nearby traditional fishing grounds. While they were sitting in a circle, a cougar suddenly appeared out of the bush and attacked a young boy. Ms. Leech sprang towards the animal, grabbing it by the scruff on its neck. The cougar then turned on her. Grasping its front paws, she wrestled with the animal as it rose on its hind legs. Using all her strength and yelling for her dog, she pushed the animal back. The dog chased the cougar up a tree and Ms. Leech quickly gathered up the injured boy and hysterical children and ran back to her house, a short distance away.
