On November 23, 1990, Mr. Lopez jumped onto the subway track to rescue a disturbed woman who had thrown herself on the tracks of the crowded St. George Subway Station in Toronto, Ontario. While standing on the southbound platform, Mr. Lopez saw from the corner of his eye that something had fallen on the track in front of the oncoming train. Realizing that it was a person, he jumped down without a moment's hesitation. When his attempts to revive the victim failed, Mr. Lopez grabbed the unconscious woman by her clothes and dragged her underneath the platform, just seconds before the braking train brushed by.
