On September 12, 1992, Tom Hass intervened when two pit-bulls savagely attacked his friend in Eganville, Ontario. The dogs had escaped from a fenced yard and, for no apparent reason, pounced on the teenager, biting and pulling him into a roadside ditch. While the animals' owner tried to pull the dogs from the victim, Tom grabbed an aluminum pipe and began beating the animals. He rendered one unconscious and stunned the other, enabling the owner to leash it. Tom then helped his friend climb onto the road, where passers-by offered assistance.
