On July 29, 1995, at Aulds Cove, Nova Scotia, Mr. Meery was hit by an out-of-control car while protecting his niece and daughter from being struck. The children were playing on a slide, in the direct path of the runaway vehicle. Mr. Meery grabbed hold of his niece and threw her out of harm's way. He clutched his daughter and shielded her as the car struck the slide and came down on top of them. Mr. Meery pushed his daughter out from underneath and managed to crawl out as the car came to rest. An ambulance brought them to hospital where they were treated for their injuries.
