On February 19, 1993, in Lakeville, New Brunswick, Mr. McLaughlin prevented an armed prowler from holding a woman and her child hostage. Responding to a telephone call from a neighbour for help, Mr. McLaughlin drove his truck to the woman's house where a man was pointing a handgun at the woman and her baby. Mr. McLaughlin persuaded the unstable man to leave with him and to allow the woman and child to stay behind. The two drove away with Mr. McLaughlin at gunpoint. They were stopped shortly thereafter by the R.C.M.P, who successfully apprehended the armed passenger.
