On February 8, 1992, Mr. Clifton rescued a neighbour's child from a burning house at Hartley Bay, British Columbia. After being told the boy was in the smoke-filled house, Mr. Clifton rushed inside, up the stairs, and tried to douse the flames with a fire extinguisher. Hearing the boy's cries coming from another room, he crawled through the dense smoke towards the sound. After a few minutes of searching, Mr. Clifton found the victim and, guided by the voices of people waiting in the stairwell, crawled back with the child, handing him to safety.
