Mr. Archibald perished while attempting to save a young boy in a cottage fire at Lake Bernard near Sundridge, Ontario, on August 17, 1992. A fire broke out while Mr. Archibald, his wife and two boys who were in their care, were sleeping. Awakened by the screams of one of the boys, all but the younger boy ran outside to safety. Realizing the child was still inside, Mr. Archibald immediately re-entered the blazing cottage, where he succumbed to the heavy smoke and collapsed. Tragically, both Mr. Archibald and the boy died.
