Medal of Bravery
On September 27, 1993, in Burlington, Ontario, Sgt. Carroll and Csts. Couce and Doherty attempted to save a woman who had been shot. She was lying on the driveway and the gunman was in the house nearby when the three police officers arrived in a patrol car protected with ballistic vests over the windows. Cst. Doherty drove the vehicle as close to the victim as possible, and provided cover while Sgt. Carroll and Cst. Couce ran to her. Cst. Couce helped lift her onto Sgt. Carroll's shoulders. Unable to manoeuvre her into the police car, Sgt. Carroll instructed the two others to provide cover while he carried her out of danger to a waiting ambulance. Csts. Couce and Doherty remained on the scene for about six hours and, unable to contact the suspect, finally entered the house in darkness to find that the gunman had killed himself. Unfortunately, his victim also died.
