Mr. Barnett rescued two people from a burning car after coming upon a highway accident near Langley, British Columbia, on August 8, 1993. Unable to open the doors on the driver's side, Mr. Barnett crawled through the hatchback and pulled the rear passenger out. He then re-entered, broke the back of the driver's seat down and, after great effort, freed the driver, whose legs were stuck under the dashboard. Mr. Barnett pulled the injured man out through the hatchback, seconds before the car was engulfed in flames.
