On October 20, 1993, Mr. Peever jumped from a moving locomotive to rescue a little girl on the tracks near Red Rock, British Columbia. After receiving news of a missing child in the area, Mr. Peever and a co-worker slowed the train they were operating. Rounding a corner, they discovered the toddler sitting on the tracks about 65 metres away, and began making a full emergency stop. Mr. Peever moved to the front of the moving train and jumped off, attempting to grab the child at the same time. He tripped and fell, but managed to knock her down. As the little girl sat up again, Mr. Peever lunged towards her and pulled her out of the path of the oncoming train.
