On July 7, 1995, Mr. Mahar lost his life while trying to rescue his 10-year-old nephew from drowning in Long Pond, near the Community of Bellburns, Newfoundland. The boy had slipped from some rocks while fishing and was being swept along by the current. His cousin, a non- swimmer, waded out and tried unsuccessfully to reach out to him, all the while calling for help. Mr. Mahar, the boy's 34-year-old uncle, ran over and jumped into the water. He swam to his nephew's side and managed to grab hold. Despite Mr. Mahar's valiant efforts, the current was too strong, and the two were pulled under, and drowned.
