On March 30, 1993, Mr. Wilson rescued two children from a house fire in Valleyview, Alberta. Alerted by his spouse that a fire had started upstairs where her two small boys were sleeping, he immediately tried to reach them, but was prevented by the flames and smoke. He climbed onto the roof, and broke a window in the children's bedroom. Unable to get through the window, he climbed down and re-entered the house, covering his head with a wet leather jacket. Ignoring the flames, Mr. Wilson made his way back to the bedroom, found one of the children and brought him to safety before returning for the second youngster.
