On June 12, 1994, in Scarborough, Ontario, Mr. Laird rescued a woman who had been taken hostage by an armed man. Running to the scene of what he first believed to be a road accident, he saw a man forcibly preventing a bloodied woman from getting out of a car. Pushing him out of the way, Mr. Laird reached for the woman, but the assailant grabbed them both. Mr. Laird, still holding onto the victim, tried to calm the assailant and dissuade him from abducting her. After Mr. Laird called to a passing motorist to assist, the man loosened his grip. Learning then that the attacker had a handgun, Mr. Laird began running with the woman and succeeded in getting her inside a nearby house to safety.
