The arms are inspired in part by arms borne by people named Mackay and Mackie, names from which Mackison is derived. The "per chevron" division is based on the chevron in Mackay arms, and the sun in the base makes a canting reference to the relationship of the names – it is essentially a "Mackie-sun".
