The colours red, blue, and gold were chosen by Mr. Bates. The interlaced bands echo the saltire cross from the Bank of Montreal’s arms, and are a reference to his tenure at this institution. The sheaves of grain honour Mr. Bates’s province of birth, Saskatchewan. They also represent the farming heritage of his family. The gold discs symbolize Mr. Bates’s expertise and career in finance and banking. They also allude to his three children as well as the three branches of his professional and volunteer service: banking, insurance and community outreach.
