Arms of Angus Lewis Macdonald

Blazon

Quarterly, 1st Argent a lion rampant Gules, 2nd Or a dexter hand couped fesswise holding a cross-crosslet fitché Gules, 3rd Or a lymphad sails furled oars elevated in saltire Sable upon a sea Vert therein a salmon naiant proper, 4th Argent an eagle Or perched on an oak tree Vert, all within a bordure Gules charged in chief with an arrow Or feathered Argent, in fess with two anchors Argent and in base with a mullet Or between two cinquefoils Argent;

Symbolism

The quartered shield in these colours with the lion, the hand holding a cross, the ship on a sea with a salmon, and the oak tree and eagle is that of the chief of the clan Macdonald of Clanranald. The position of the eagle and the addition of the red border are differences, indicating Mr. Macdonald’s descent from a chief of that clan who lived in the 16th century. The anchors most probably refer both to Mr. Macdonald’s service in the Royal Canadian Navy and to his father’s service as Minister of Naval Affairs of Canada during the Second World War. The cinquefoils possibly represent mayflowers, the provincial flower of Nova Scotia, Mr. Macdonald’s home province, for which his father served as premier.

Crest

Blazon

A castle Argent masoned Sable issuant from the central tower thereof a dexter arm embowed vambraced grasping a sword and from each of the lateral towers a St. John’s wort flower stalked and leaved proper;

Symbolism

The design of the castle and arm in armour holding a sword is the crest of the chief of Macdonald of Clanranald. The St. John’s wort flowers are a difference.

Motto

Blazon

DÌLEAS AIR MUIR ’S AIR TÌR*; * The records of the Court of the Lord Lyon indicate “’A AIR TÌR,” but this has been confirmed to be a mistranscription.

Symbolism

This Scots Gaelic phrase, meaning “Faithful on sea and on land,” answers the motto of the MacDonald Lords of the Isles, meaning “On sea and on land.”

Motto

Blazon

NONE DARE GAINSAY;

Symbolism

This English phrase means “No one will deny.” The motto is restricted to the heirs of Mr. Macdonald who will inherit his undifferenced arms.
