Arms of John Malcolm MacFarlane

Blazon

Argent a saltire engrailed cantoned between four roses Gules, on a chief Azure two anchors Or;

Symbolism

The blue horizontal stripe is a difference applied to the full arms of the chief of Clan MacFarlane to indicate Mr. MacFarlane’s descent from a previous chief. It represents the ocean, while the two anchors, symbolizing hope, evoke his grandfather and father, and their service in the naval forces of Great Britain and Canada.

Crest

Blazon

A demi-wild man brandishing in his dexter hand a broadsword proper and holding in his sinister hand an anchor Or;

Symbolism

The Crest is similar to that of the chief of Clan MacFarlane, in which a man holds a sword and is pointing to a royal crown. His attitude evokes the motto of the clan chief, “This I’ll defend.” The anchor represents Mr. MacFarlane, and repeats the idea of hope.

Motto

Blazon

HOPE I HAVE AS AN ANCHOR, SURE AND STEADFAST;

Symbolism

This phrase alludes to the anchors in the arms and crest.
