Governor General's Caring Canadian Award
For 24 years, Thomas Dunwoody was a volunteer firefighter with the Metchosin Volunteer Fire Department. When he had to officially retire, he was asked to stay on as dispatcher. He is also the coordinator of the department's annual Muscular Dystrophy Drive. For eight years, every week, Mr. Dunwoody has been delivering for the Meals on Wheels program. In addition, since 1985, he has been volunteering his services at the Victoria General Hospital, tutoring children in long-term care and, more recently, welcoming and reassuring new patients who arrive for treatment.
