Jean B. Rogers, Pender Island, B.C.
Governor General's Caring Canadian Award
Jean Rogers has been Pender Island's "guardian angel" for thirty years. She works at the Island's library and at the community services thrift shop. A founding member of the local palliative care society and Canadian Cancer Society, she now runs a visitor program and support group. She organized a group of volunteers to drive Island residents to medical appointments and established the Pender Island Care Bears to visit and assist people who are elderly, sick, isolated or lonely. Mrs. Rogers also helped found an adult day care and a social awareness council, is active in her church, and belongs to a variety of other local organizations.
