Governor General's Caring Canadian Award
Al Spencer's involvement with the local Recreation Commission and Kinsmen Club has played a major role in the development of recreation and sports in the town. He worked hard to ensure that activities such as the Kinsmen Summer Festival, the Terry Fox Run, the annual softball tournament and the slowpitch championships remain major events. He has coached minor hockey, volunteered with the Sea Cadets and helped organize the "Come Home Year Celebrations" in 1997. In addition, Mr. Spencer helped raise funds for Operation Go Home, Multiple Sclerosis and Cystic Fibrosis, as well as for a new Zamboni for the arena and a new fire truck for the town.
