  • Awarded on: 1996-05-23
Gertrude Mary Fleming, St. John's, Newfoundland Governor General's Caring Canadian Award Gertrude Fleming taught both in outport one-room schools and in larger schools in St. John's. Since retiring, she has been a full-time volunteer teacher helping students who need extra time and attention or food and clothes, without missing a day in 10 years. Throughout her life she has also been involved in her church and in her community as a volunteer at Exon House, a school for persons with mental handicaps, and for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, the Canadian Cancer Society, the Lung Association and the Heart and Stroke Foundation. She is affectionately known as the "little teacher" -- small in stature -- but big in giving of her time, energy and love.
