Marion Elizabeth Saunders, Newcastle, Ont.
Governor General's Caring Canadian Award
For more than a quarter century, Marion Saunders has provided outstanding support to the families, spouses and children of Canadian Forces personnel. Long active in Guides, volunteer teaching and the Red Cross, she helped create the Toronto Military Forces Resources Centre, where she served as information and volunteer coordinator. She has been involved in the Anglican church for most of her life, is President of the Protestant National Women's Guild of the Armed Forces, and was one of two lay Canadian Forces delegates to the Anglican General Synod in Ottawa in 1995. In addition, Mrs. Saunders is a member of the Primate's World Relief and Development Committee, which oversees the Church's work in emergency relief, refugee concerns and international development.
