  • Awarded on: 2004-05-07
Evelyn Black, Powell River, British Columbia Governor General's Caring Canadian Award Evelyn Black began working in the women's auxiliary of her church in 1934. During the Second World War, she formed a group to sew for soldiers and people in need. In 1945, she organized the forerunner of what is now the Powell River Health Care Auxiliary, a dedicated group of people who volunteer time and energy in support of local health care programs. Aside from the gift shop and library, her special focus has been the auxiliary's Economy Shop, which accepts donations of goods, refurbishes them and sells them to less fortunate residents at a fraction of their value. She continues to volunteer at the shop on a regular basis and to work for the betterment of her community.
