Governor General's Caring Canadian Award
As a girl, Leona Burkey sang at benefits, weddings, funerals and senior citizens homes. When her sister became seriously ill, Leona postponed her university plans to care for her, and became a pillar of strength for her family. She looked after her sister's needs and encouraged her sister's recovery following a lengthy hospital stay. In addition to caring for her sister, Miss Burkey found the time to organize a local youth choir in her parish, to sing and play guitar at various fundraising events and to entertain at senior citizens residences. In addition, she has found time to volunteer with the Cadet Corps and is a Seniors' Program coordinator for the CNIB.
