      A distinguished physicist and researcher, he has had a major influence on the development of lasers and their application in the fields of defence and medicine. In particular, he was responsible for the discovery of the high-power pulsed carbon dioxide laser, recognized around the globe as a technological revolution. His work, much of which was carried out at the Defence Research Establishment Valcartier, has led to technology transfers, the establishment of firms, including the National Optics Institute, and the design of new and marketable products. A consultant to the military, he has also participated in many committees and scientific boards.
