She is a champion of women's and minority rights and a political and social activist whose contributions to democratic and social processes are exceptional. The first Black woman elected to political office in Canada, she served for fourteen years as a Member of the British Columbia Legislature and is now the Chief Commissioner of the Ontario Human Rights Commission.
