He is a chemical engineer by training and an inventor by discovery. His expertise as a scientist, researcher and administrator made him an outstanding founding chairman of the Alberta Oil Sands Technology and Research Authority and president of the Alberta Research Council. Throughout his active career he has been a strong advocate of industry-university-government cooperation in research and development.
