An expert on wildlife and reindeer husbandry, he was responsible for saving and developing the Canadian reindeer herd in the Arctic and significantly furthering the Canadian Arctic Polar Shelf surveys. He also played a key role in navigating the first private vessel through the Northwest Passage, where he carried out important studies in Arctic ethnology and Inuit and Scandinavian migrations.
