Trained as a nurse, she served the people of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia for many years as the director of outpost hospitals for the Canadian Red Cross Society. A strong proponent of community-based health care, she was instrumental in the establishment of the Cobequid Multi- Service Centre to respond to the needs of a large urban and rural population and she continues to serve as the volunteer Chairperson of the Board.
