Professor Emeritus and former Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at the University of Victoria, he is one of Canada's leading authorities on linguistics. The founder, at the University of Montreal, of the first Department of Linguistics in French-speaking Canada, he is renowned for his published works, which include dictionaries and grammar books.
