A world-renowned neurologist, Vladimir Hachinski is a recognized leader in the study of stroke and dementia. In the 1970s, he co-founded Canada's first intensive care unit for stroke patients at Sunnybrook Medical Centre, in Toronto. He also devised a scale to distinguish between Alzheimer's disease and dementia caused by small strokes. Widely respected by his peers, he is the first president of the International Society for Vascular Behavioural and Cognitive Disorders, editor-in-chief of the medical journal Stroke, and distinguished university professor at the University of Western Ontario. He continues to advance knowledge in preventing stroke and delaying the onset of Alzheimer's disease.
