With no formal training in the field, she has shown unusual ability and initiative in genetic research. She has developed newborn screening programs, notably for the detection of carriers of the Tay-Sachs gene. She lectures at McGill and is co-director of the Hereditary Metabolism Disease Unit, which is run in conjunction with the Children's Hospital Research Institute of the University of Montreal.
