He spent his early life at Lumsden, Saskatchewan, as painter (of both pictures and signs), trapper and writer of' stories. After study in London he taught at the Vancouver School of art before heading to the Alberta College of Art at Calgary for twenty years. He so developed the latter institution that it produced a generation of' leading artists in western Canada.
