Born in Formosa and trained in the United States and Canada, he taught at McGill University before becoming professor of Geography at the University of British Columbia. His writings and many honours attest to his eminence as a geographer, and especially as an authority on cartography and permafrost. In retirement he continues his work in the Arctic.
