Geographer in the great tradition of Canadian exploration. Having joined the Cambridge University expedition to Arctic Canada in 1936, he commanded the advance party of Exercise Musk-Ox during the Second World War. Later he undertook Arctic research for the Defence Research Board and became Scientific Adviser to the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, Ottawa.
