Sergeant Hoppe was the commander of a key observation post located between Serb and Muslim forces in Bosnia-Herzegovina. On several occasions, the post came under direct, aimed, small-arms and anti-armour fire in July 1994. Conscious of the need to maintain his position of observation of the opposing forces, he moved his armoured vehicles while preparing to return fire to safeguard his men and carry out his task. On one occasion, he had to return fire and manoeuvre his patrol out of danger. Throughout, he remained calm and controlled, displayed outstanding leadership, and ensured the safety of his patrol and his mission.
