From November 1992 to May 1993, RCMP Corporal Shannon served as a Police Monitor for the UN Protection Force Civilian Police (UNPROFOR CIVPOL) in Sarajevo, in the former Yugoslavia. With remarkable leadership and professionalism, he headed the Civilian Police Station at Sarajevo Airport, which was constantly under heavy shelling. On two separate occasions in January 1993, Corporal Shannon, facing considerable risk by dodging artillery fire, went to the rescue of monitors who had become disoriented during sniper attacks and led them out of the danger zone.
