In Bermuda, on the night of October 13, 1973, several members of the Canadian Armed Forces travelling by motorbike took a wrong turn onto an abandoned bridge. All fell from their machines and one rider was thrown over the rail into the water, some 15 feet below. The victim, a non- swimmer, was carried downstream. With complete disregard for the risk he would incur in this entirely strange environment, Cpl. Bond jumped from the bridge and swam to the victim. Others in the party dropped planks from the bridge which the rescuer used to keep the man afloat until both were helped to shore.
