On May 21, 1993, near Burlington, Ontario, Mr. Kachur saved a toddler from a burning vehicle shortly before it exploded. Driving home from work, Mr. Kachur witnessed a head-on collision and stopped to help. He raced towards a woman who was screaming for help and convinced her to stand back so he could enter her flaming car to rescue her little boy, who was trapped in a car seat in the back. Mr. Kachur pulled the front seat off the child's legs and ripped off the seat belt as the car filled with thick, black smoke and the tires began bursting. He scooped the boy into his arms and ran to the side of the road moments before the car exploded.
