On July 20, 1996, André Lamouche rescued a mother and her two-year-old daughter from a submerged seaplane that had crashed into Rivière-des-Prairies, near Montreal, Quebec. First at the scene, Mr. Lamouche dived underneath the overturned wreckage, managed to open the door, free a woman and help her to the surface. He then dived again and, despite the danger of being trapped inside the sinking plane, entered the cabin. With aching lungs, he groped around in the dark until he located the toddler, floating motionless. Once he had lifted the little girl to the surface and revived her, he continued to search for other passengers until others arrived to help. Regrettably, four people could not be saved.
