On 29 April 1982, Eleanor Lindsay (née Gilbert) saved two men from certain drowning in the icy waters of the Saint John River. During an evening stroll along the shore with her young nephew, Mrs. Lindsay heard cries for help. She saw two men clinging to an overturned boat, their heads barely above water, struggling against the strong current. Though she had never handled a canoe before, Mrs. Lindsay launched one which was lying on the bank and paddled toward the men. The two were by then numb with cold and no longer able to fight against the weight of their soggy clothing. With great difficulty and with constant risk of capsizing, she pulled the victims on board and brought them to safety.
