In the early hours of 15 December 1982, the selfless actions of Michael Timothy Lewis saved the lives of four members of his family when fire gutted their two-storey house. Awakened by cries that fire had broken out, Mr. Lewis opened his upstairs bedroom door and found the hallway full of flames, the spreading fire blocking access to the stairs. He ran to his grandmother's room and urged her to join his wife in his bedroom. He then dashed to another room, seized his son and brought him to his wife. His shouts failing to arouse his eleven-year-old daughter, he ignored the obvious peril and again raced through the inferno, reached her and carried her to his bedroom. He smashed the window, lowered his wife and two children to the ground but found the opening too small to push the elderly woman out. He kicked out the window frame and succeeded in dropping her to those below. Then, and only then, did Mr. Lewis leap to safety. He sustained extensive burns during the rescue.
