In the early morning hours of December 10, 1989, Mr. Kleinert rescued two women from a burning house in Edmonton, Alberta. While driving past, he noticed several people watching and immediately jumped out of the car to enquire if anyone was still inside. Told that two women, one disabled, were trapped in the house, Mr. Kleinert entered the smoke-filled building and, feeling his way, located a young girl lying semi-conscious on the floor. He dragged her out, then entered the house again to retrieve the second unconscious woman. While he was trying to revive her with mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, members of the fire department arrived on the scene.
