On 14 May 1979, Colleen Serbyniuk, an eleven-year-old member of the school traffic patrol in Winnipeg, pushed two young children out of the way of a speeding van. The van had failed to stop at a traffic signal and was heading directly towards the children, who were crossing at the intersection. At the risk of injury to herself, Colleen seized two children and pushed them back to the curb; but a third, a boy of five whom she could not reach, was hit and seriously hurt. But for Colleen's quick action the others would doubtless have been struck.
