On 23 July 1977 Thomas Royston, aged nineteen, saved a woman from drowning in the Lachine Rapids. Thomas and his younger brother were fishing when they saw the woman jump into the river. While his brother went to summon help from police Thomas swam in the rough water, breasting cross-currents until he reached the woman twenty-five metres from shore. With difficulty he brought her to safety. But for his determined efforts she would almost certainly have been drawn under and drowned.
