Gary Rowe, then aged sixteen, saved a friend from drowning at Outside Pond near the town on 4 July 1975. The boys were swimming together across the lake when, some hundred feet from shore, the friend experienced difficulty in carrying on. He panicked and sank in twelve feet of water. When Gary heard his friend's cries, he swam several yards to his aid. He was forced to go under water twice in order to raise him to the surface. The latter began to resist but was quickly restrained by Gary and then brought to shore.
