At Big Whiteshell Lake, Manitoba, on July 10, 1973, twenty-one-year-old Aaron Katz and his younger sister were swimming to shore from a raft anchored some 200 feet out when the girl got into difficulties and panicked. Aaron went to her assistance and held her head above water until he became exhausted. Moments later another swimmer arrived with a life preserver for the girl. Aaron, meanwhile, disappeared below the surface and when he was brought to shore, efforts to revive him failed.
