On April 12, 1984, there was still ice in the George's River where it meets Nova Scotia's Bras d'Or Lake. Yet Kenneth Jackson, experienced enough to know that hypothermia would result from even limited exposure, did not hesitate to enter the river to rescue a woman who had jumped from a bridge. Judging that he would be unable to rescue her using standard holds, he pushed her some 10- metres towards land. Then, tiring and caught in the tidal current, he seized her collar and towed her the remaining 10-20 metres to shore.
