R.C.M. Police Cst. Roy Inman swam to the aid of a nine-year-old girl who had been caught in an undertow and was being carried out to sea on July 23, 1973. The rescuer who had earlier been swimming in the area, was fully aware of the treacherous conditions. Nevertheless, seeing the child bobbing about and over 100 yards from the beach, he went unhesitantly and alone. On reaching the child, he allowed her to put her arms around his neck so that he could support her above the water. In this position he was obliged to return, a good deal of the time swimming underwater. He progressed a few yards at a time and finally both reached the shore in safety. If Cst. Inman had not undertaken this exhausting and perilous rescue, the child would almost certainly have perished.
